Simple Steps to Begin Chanting Today

You do not need to wait for a guru, a temple, special beads, or a perfect understanding of philosophy to begin chanting the Hare Krishna mahāmantra. The holy name is so supremely merciful that it is available to anyone, anywhere, at any time, without any prior qualification.

Here is everything you need to begin chanting right now—today, in the next five minutes, wherever you are.

Step 1: Learn the Mantra (30 seconds)

The mahāmantra consists of just three words arranged in sixteen syllables:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Pronunciation guide:

  • Hare = "Ha-ray"
  • Krishna = "Krish-na"
  • Rama = "Rā-ma" (long 'a' in the first syllable)

That's it. Three words. You already know the mantra.

Step 2: Find a Quiet Spot (1 minute)

You don't need a temple or a meditation room. Any reasonably quiet space will do:

  • Your bedroom
  • A park bench
  • Your car (parked!)
  • A balcony or garden

Step 3: Sit Comfortably

Sit in any comfortable position. Cross-legged on the floor, in a chair, on your bed—it doesn't matter. Keep your back reasonably straight to stay alert.

Step 4: Begin Chanting (5–10 minutes)

Simply start speaking the mantra aloud, at a comfortable pace:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Repeat it again. And again. Continue for 5–10 minutes.

The one essential rule: Listen to yourself as you chant. Let each word enter your ears. This hearing is the key to the entire process.

Step 5: Notice How You Feel

After a few minutes of chanting, pause and observe:

  • Does your mind feel calmer?
  • Do you notice a subtle sense of peace?
  • Does the world feel slightly different?

Many first-time chanters report an immediate sense of lightness, clarity, or unexplainable contentment. This is the holy name beginning its purifying work.

Optional: Get Japa Beads

While not required to start, japa mālā (108 tulasī beads on a string) enhance the practice by:

  • Helping you count repetitions (108 repetitions = 1 "round").
  • Engaging the sense of touch in the meditation.
  • Connecting you to Tulasī-devī, a great devotee of Krishna.

Japa beads are available at any ISKCON temple, Hare Krishna center, or online store.

What Comes Next?

Once you've had your first experience of chanting:

  1. Try to chant daily. Even 5 minutes a day creates a habit.
  2. Gradually increase. From 5 minutes to 10, then 15, then a full round (about 7-8 minutes on beads).
  3. Learn more. Read the Bhagavad-gītā As It Is by Srila Prabhupada. Visit a local ISKCON temple. Connect with devotees.
  4. Don't overthink it. The chanting will guide you. Just keep doing it.

No Disqualifications

The Viṣṇu-dharmottara Purāṇa declares:

na deśa-niyamas tatra na kāla-niyamas tathā

"There is no restriction of place or time."

You do not need:

  • To be a Hindu or any particular religion.
  • To be vegetarian (though it helps).
  • To understand Sanskrit.
  • To be "spiritual" or "religious."
  • To give up anything before starting.

You only need the willingness to try.

Conclusion

Beginning to chant the Hare Krishna mahāmantra is the easiest, most natural, and most powerful spiritual step you can take. It requires no money, no membership, no preparation, and no qualification beyond a spark of curiosity or sincerity. The Lord has made His name freely available to everyone. All you have to do is open your mouth and call Him. Begin today.
