The Highest Goal of Chanting

The Highest Goal of Chanting

In the practice of mantra-yoga, some seek peace, others seek psychic powers, and many seek liberation from suffering. However, for the Gaudiya Vaishnava, these goals are considered secondary. The highest goal of chanting the Hare Krishna mahāmantra is Kṛṣṇa-prema—pure, unalloyed love for the Supreme Lord.

Beyond Mukti (Liberation)

Advanced devotees do not even desire mukti (liberation). Lord Chaitanya prayed in His Śikṣāṣṭakam (Verse 4):

"na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśvara kāmaye"

"O Almighty Lord! I do not desire wealth, followers, or beautiful women. I only want Your causeless devotional service, birth after birth."

Chanting for the highest goal means wanting Krishna for Krishna's sake, not for what we can get out of Him.

The "Fifth Goal" (Pañcama-puruṣārtha)

Vedic culture traditionally lists four goals: Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure), and Moksha (liberation). Chanting the holy name introduces the fifth and highest goal: Prema (Divine Love). This love is so powerful that it makes even the joy of liberation seem like a drop of water compared to the ocean.

Symptoms of the Highest Goal

When a chanter reaches this target:

  • Total Detachment: Material attractions lose their flavor entirely.
  • Constant Remembrance: The mind cannot forget Krishna for even a second.
  • Intense Compassion: The devotee wants everyone to experience the joy of the holy name.

The Fruit of the Name

The holy name is compared to a "wish-fulfilling gem." If you ask for peace, it will give you peace. If you ask for love, it will give you love. Advanced chanting is the act of refusing to ask for anything less than the supreme gift—eternal service in the mood of pure affection.

Conclusion

The highest goal is already contained within the sixteen words of the mahāmantra. Our task is to chant with the right intention—not as a transaction, but as a pure offering of the soul. By aiming for Kṛṣṇa-prema, we ensure that our human life reaches its ultimate, most glorious fulfillment.
