The Ecstasy of the Holy Name

The Ecstasy of the Holy Name

The word "ecstasy" in common language often Refers to an intense but temporary emotional high. In the science of bhakti, however, ānanda (spiritual ecstasy) is the constitutional, ever-increasing joy of the soul. Chanting the Hare Krishna mahāmantra is the most direct way to tap into this ocean of nectar.

The Nature of Namānanda

The joy derived from the holy name (Nāmānanda) is fundamentally different from material pleasure:

  1. Ati-mānasa: It is beyond the mind. It is not something you "think" into existence; it is a revelation of the soul.
  2. Akṣaya: It is undiminishing. Material fun ends in exhaustion, but chanting leads to more energy and deeper taste.
  3. Viśuddha: It is pure. It leaves no "hangover" of regret or attachment; it only leaves a desire for more service.

The Signs of Ecstasy (Aṣṭa-sāttvika-vikāra)

Advanced devotees describe eight physical and emotional symptoms that may manifest when the heart is completely captured by the ecstasy of the name:

  • Stambha: Being stunned or paralyzed by joy.
  • Sveda: Perspiration.
  • Romāñca: Standing of the hairs on end.
  • Svara-bheda: Choking or cracking of the voice.
  • Vepathu: Trembling.
  • Vaivarṇya: Change of color (pallor or blushing).
  • Aśru: Tears of love.
  • Pralaya: Fainting or loss of external consciousness.

Why Do We Not Feel the Ecstasy?

If the holy name is full of ecstasy, why do we sometimes feel it is a chore? The acharyas explain that our "palate" is diseased by material desires, making the "sugar candy" of the holy name taste bitter. The "medicine" for this is to keep chanting until the tongue is healed and the natural taste returns.

Cultivating the Taste (Ruci)

  • Chant with Devotees: Ecstasy is contagious. In the association of those who have a "taste," our own realization is accelerated.
  • Serve the Name: See chanting as a service to please Krishna. When He is pleased, He sends the "current" of ecstasy into the chanter's heart.

Conclusion

The ecstasy of the holy name is our birthright. It is the real "wealth" of the human being. By patiently working through the stages of practice and clearing our offenses, we eventually dive into the nectarine ocean of the mahāmantra, where every mantra is a wave of infinite, divine bliss.
